COAST

An exhibition of new paintings by Padraig McCaul and new ceramics by Grainne Watts which will run in the Gallery in Dalkey Heritage Centre from the 13th of April until the 18th of April.

The exhibition will be officially opened by the Irish Minister for Culture, Tourism and Sport, Mary Hanafin.

The coast is that point where land and sea meet. It is the point that continually inspires Delgany based artists Padraig McCaul and Grainne Watts. While both work in different mediums they each take directly from the elements that make up the coast. Grainne from the sea, Padraig from the land, and both from that place where water meets the sand and rocks of the land’s edge.

Padraig’s paintings take their inspiration from the landscapes that run to the coast's edge. From the rolling mountains and jagged cliffs that plunge into the white foam of the swirling Atlantic waves to the simple stone houses that stand quietly in the sandy fields, looking out to sea, standing guard. From the pure white bog cotton and purple and red heathers of Achill’s blanket bogs to the rusty red roofs and peeling white walls of long neglected farm buildings.

“Padraig McCaul’s romantic, painterly vision of the west of Ireland excludes all stain of human interference (apart from his windowless, doorless houses), and aims to draw the viewer into his quiet imagining of the lives lived there.”

“If you like endless coastlines and simple, beautiful landscapes then don't miss Padraig McCaul's minimalist paintings of Western Ireland

Grainne’s work comes from the sea. She is currently working on two distinct series of work which explore evocative connections between land /shore and sea. The 'Accretion' and 'Erosion' series are a response to inspirational 'treasures' found over a lifetime of holidays on the Connemara coastline. The 'Landfish' series represent a contemporary interpretation of Darwin's 'Ichthys' walking fish, allowing the artist to play with vibrant surface decoration and challenging construction techniques.

This is the second time Padraig and Grainne have worked together, having exhibited last year in White’s Hotel as part of the Wexford Opera Festival fringe. COAST brings the vibrant colours and textures of Grainne’s ceramics together with the bold, impasto land and seascapes of Padraig’s oil paintings.

The exhibition will be opened with a wine reception on Tuesday, 13th April from 7pm to 9pm
