Padraig McCaul - Irish Contemporary Landscape Artist

Welcome to my online gallery. I am an Irish contemporary artist specialising in vibrant, expressive palette knife landscape and figurative paintings inspired by the raw beauty of the West of Ireland. Having spent a transformative decade living on Achill Island with my young family, I draw endless inspiration from the energy, light, and atmosphere of the Atlantic coastline.

I have been painting fulltime for twenty years and have studios in Mullingar and Achill Island. My work is available from my online store and through my network of eight partner galleries in Ireland, including The Doorway Gallery in Dublin and Kenny's Lahinch Art Gallery in Co.Clare. I also exhibit annually at Dublin's premier art fair Art Source.

Inspiration from the West of Ireland

My work captures the beauty and soul of the West of Ireland with it's awe inspiring mountains and cliffs, it's wild atlantic coast, winding country roads, rustic farmhouses with my signature red rooftops and solitary telegraph poles. In contrast, my figurative pieces explore the warmth, intimacy, and tender connections of family life. Using a rich, colour-filled palette and bold impasto textures, I aim to translate the vivid spirit of the Irish countryside directly onto canvas.

An International Reputation

Over the years, my original paintings have earned international acclaim, finding homes in private collections worldwide. My work has been exhibited internationally in London, Australia, and New York, and is shown regularly in Ireland through my partner gallery network.

I have held sell out exhibitions in Ireland with the Doorway Gallery in Dublin and with the Kidogo Arthouse in Fremantle, Australia and exhibit regularly at the Affordable Art Fair in London with the Doorway Gallery. In 2016 my work was selected to feature prominently in Eircode’s national marketing campaign and website.

In 2019 I was commissioned to create a series of paintings for a new contemporary Irish dance production, Fáinne Óir which premiered in New York in September 2019. The resulting 20 paintings were a collaboration between the composer Kathy Fahey and choreographer Ciara Sexton. They were digitised and projected onto a screen on stage to provide the backdrop to the story and choreography. The show has also played in Dublin’s Olympia Theatre, UL Concert Hall, Limerick and Theatre Royal, Castlebar. And in 2027 a tour of four cities in Mexico is planned.

Testimonials

"There is a quiet to your work. A gentle hush not only in voice but in action. In all your images where there is a road I gaze upon them and want to walk slower and more mindfully. I can't tell you why. It could be the barren-ness of the image, or the color you use that magically makes me only hear the wind...I don't know. But something about your craft brings a sacred quiet to my experience that I find deeply healing...I am in awe of your work and could not be more thrilled to have encountered the way you've been called to bring beauty to the world. Oh my... I am using so many words to describe the feeling and emotion a single image can evoke. You paint. I write." Julia, USA

"Padraig McCaul's romantic, painterly vision of the west of Ireland excludes all stain of human interference (apart from his windowless, doorless houses), and aims to draw the viewer into his quiet imagining of the lives lived there." Joyce Hickey, The Irish Times

"McCaul catches the sounds of silence in his art. His Achill houses have no windows and hardly any doors. They turn their back on you in pictures that make you wonder, reflect and sense." Professor Jan Erik Rekdal, University of Oslo

"Inviting, provocative, unforgettable, the art of Padraig McCaul is a treasure waiting anyone who has experienced the profound beauty of Ireland. McCaul brings the essence of Ireland's stark isolated beauty to life." Susan Magan, Ohio Irish American News

" I feel that Padraig sees the world more vividly than the rest of us." Pat Kenny, Newstalk Radio
